EXECUTIVE MBA – AN OVERVIEW

in Mba

Today’s MBA programs are designed to cater to the diverse group of professionals. To meet the educational aspirations and enhance the careers of working business professionals, managers and executives the option of Executive MBA is surely a boon. The Executive MBA, commonly referred to as the EMBA, is usually geared towards professionals who are looking to update the general management skills and prepare themselves for career advancement opportunities.

The differentiating factor for the EMBA from the other MBA options is the level of experience and insights students bring to the class. With more and more candidates realizing the importance of gaining work experience prior to pursuing a management education has increased the popularity levels of the EMBA. The Executive MBA is offered globally and differs considerably based on the different locations.

In India it is offered on a full-time basis mainly by the IIM’s with an average work experience of 10 years. An EMBA from outside India is offered on a part-time basis so that working professionals don’t need to take a break from their careers. The courses offered in an EMBA Program are normally the same as those taught in a traditional MBA program. However, EMBA courses are enhanced by the extensive professional work experience of the participants and are uniquely structured to teach a maximum amount of course material in an accelerated timetable. Owing to this work experience (preferably managerial) is given precedence over the GMAT and academic scores.

An executive MBA programme is a part-time programme where the student does not take a break from his job to pursue the course. The essential difference between a normal part-time MBA student and an E-MBA one is that of profile. An E-MBA student is typically an experienced executive who does not leave his current pursuit to take up the course. Also, unlike regular part-time MBA, E-MBA is completed within two years, just like a normal full-time MBA would. An E-MBA student also has the advantage of putting to practice what he learns simultaneously in his current work place.

The first EMBA programme was offered by University of Chicago in 1943, and now many b-schools offer the same. In India reputed institutes like Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Indian School of Business, Symbiosis Pune and many other offer the course.

The admission process for E-MBA is tough and rigorous which focuses a lot on the essays, professional experience and performance. Since the course is for executives who have already shown their mettle on the field, it is but obvious that the school is looking for that individualism, diversity and winning edge from the student.

In addition to the skill set enhancement that the EMBA offers, in Europe it is one of the costliest programs, for instance the EMBA program offered at INSEAD has a tuition fee of € 90,000 with London Business School’s EMBA costing £ 47,700. For the same reason, most of the B-Schools expect to be company sponsored.

The EMBA could be a good option considering the current economic situation. While pursuing this could students have the provision to study and work at the same time, allowing them to enhance their skill set without interrupting their careers.
